We were fortunate to retain the Centenary Baton for two weeks in April. Splendid and novel activities were arranged during this time. Venue 1: Whitby and Pickering Several members and Trustees met, many in period and others in fancy dress. They then rode in charabancs to Whitby railway station. After lunch at the Whistle Stop cafe`, we boarded the North Yorkshire Steam Railway and had a wonderful ride through the spectacular scenery, having lots of fun on the way, waving our flags andin general, having a super time. At Pickering station, we were met by local dignitaries and had tea Venue 2; The York Farming Museum Here a display by the Women’s Land Army had been arranged. The event was very well attended, period dress was again “a la mode” and afternoon tea followed. Venue 3: Sutton Bank Gliding Club One of our intrepid Trustees circled around in a glider, pioleted by St George himself, defending with his trusty sword the blushing maiden who finally stepped onto the ground to present the baton to our Chairman, Mrs Janice Whiteford. Once again, period dress was in vogue and after a delicious cream tea hosted by the Gliding Club, the baton was ceremoniously handed over to a representative from North Yorkshire West Federation, Mrs Anne Harrison Our Photographs on the WI Baton .
