Hawkhills Lunch January 2016 This was a lovely venue and the first Fereration event of the new year . 139 ladies enjoyed a good lunch and a great speaker in Jean Harrod who talked about her role as a diplomat before she became a writer. The event was organised by Vice-Chairman Jean Hammond   Romanby WI February 2016 Hearts and Hashtags On a dark afternoon we threw open the door and offered a warm welcome to all at a Craftafternoon Tea event . The public were invited to attend the event to make, wear and share a green heart in the run up to Valentine’s Day.The event is part of the # Show The Love campaign fronted by The Climate Coalition, a group of 100 organisations, encouraging people to start conversations about things they love that need protection from climate change.Despite the rain crowds poured into the appropiately green WI Hall to take part in craft workshops, including crochet, card making, sugar craft, children’s collage, painting and more. Hot tea and many homemade heart shaped biscuits were on offer in true WI fashion. North Yorkshire Rotters attended the event demonstrating their peddle powered smoothie making bike and tips to cut food waste and increase composting at home. Although the bike was supposed to be an attraction for children the ladies coudn’t resist and had a go! Our President, Elizabeth Roberts said’We are thrilled with the turn out today, and are very pleased to have the support of North Yorkshire Rotters. Many people don’t realise what the WI is really about. Lots of important social and enviromental campaigns have been started by the WI at a national level. Using our craft skills to get people talking about climate change today has been great fun, thought provoking and heart warming. One little boy made a card with me and inside wrote”Love the Landscape, Love the World”. I coudn’t have put it better myself’ Samantha Jennings Hawkhills Lunch 11th March     2.Speaker Jean Harrod enthralled our members once again with stories from her life in the Diplomatic Service     3. Jean signd copies of her book     4. Jean was a very popular speaker and the queue for book signings never seemed to get any shorter An Evening of Tapas 27th April at York Cookery School Chefs - Fiona Mcbeath and Fraser Clarke WI Co-ordinator - Jane Pearce -Brandsby 24 members attended the York Cookery School; to watch how to make tapas. Ladies came from Osbaldwick & Murton,Rufforth, Newton on Ouse, Middleton Aisalby & Wrelton, and Askham Bryan. The first dish demonstrated was empanadas, small pasties filled with chicken and chorizo. The pastry was basically oil and flour and the oil was rape seed oil from Thixendale, in North Yorkshire. Fiona maintained this was as good as olive oil..Fraser ably assisted and then handed round the empanadas with help from Gillian a member from Middleton. Tapas are a wide variety of starters and snacks in Spanish cuisine. They may be cold or served hot, a favourite ingredient is chorizo sausage. Members were served pinchos (pintxos) on small sticks, and melon with olive and mint. We were shown how to make Albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce). Pincho moruno a stick with spicy meat that contained sausage and another pinchon, hard boiled egg with gambas. Small pieces of bread with a base of tomato sauce and various items such as manchego cheese and mushroom were also served. We all had a very enjoyable evening thanks to Jane and the two very knowledgeable and very charming chefs. It was a taste of Spain on a very cold evening.
